Subtitled: The Fran Chowder* Method of Card Giving (*Name changed to protect privacy....more mine than hers. More on that below.....)
Part One
We're into December now, first Friday of! Time to show you a Tiddly Inks creation! And, seeing as it's three weeks until the big day, I've got a Christmas card for you.....
This is one of my favouritest Tiddly digis. It's called
Santa's Helper. Let me tell you, it's perfect for the preteen boy crowd. Or the teen boy....or a guy of any age really. I love him. The digi that is, not the guy of any age.
I would have preferred my sentiment backed by green paper rather than the blue but it was cut from paper from the patterned paper pad so I didn't have a choice. Just wanted to throw out there that I know the blue isn't exactly the best colour for this....'coz if I know that you know that I know that green woulda looked better then it makes it all okay.
Make sure you go check out the other fabulous Fabby Friday makes the rest of the DT has come up with. You can see 'em right
here.
Part Two
So, if you happened to catch the subtitle at the top of the post you're probably wondering just who Fran Chowder is, why she has such a ridiculous name, and what her method of card giving entails. Well, let me tell you.....
My bestie's Mom is a force to be reckoned with. Not in an oh-no-here-she-comes-I'm-scared-hide-me type of way, more of a goodly tornado (not that there is such a thing, of course, just trying for an aptly descriptive narrative here) type of way. She can sweep up everything in her path and get it all working towards whatever goal she's working towards. I could describe her more using words like strong-willed and task-driven, but really, I think you get it. And her name really isn't Fran Chowder, of course. I'm using a pseudonym 'coz, well it would be embarrassing for me if post this someway, somehow, got back to her. 'Coz she would call me on it. And I know we don't have the same sense of humour. So, I'm playing it safe. Plus it's pays homage to the time I was with her at a Tim Hortons, it would be about 12 years ago now, and this conversation happened between her and the cashier.
Fran: Is the soup Boston Clam Chowder or New England Clam Chowder?
Poor Unsuspecting Teen Boy Cashier: Ummmmmm......
Fran: *waiting patiently* Hm, which is it?
PUTBC: *turning to look at the soup board* Ahhhhh.....
Fran: Is it a tomato based broth or a cream based?
PUTBC: *panicked-stricken look all over his 16 year old face* Uhhhhhhhh......
Fran: Is the soup red, or is it white? Never mind, I'll have the chicken noodle.
Most fun I've had in a Tim Hortons ever.
So, now that you know a little about Fran Chowder I can tell you about her method of card giving. Because honestly, it's the best thing ever. In a lmao kind of way. As cardmakers, we, obviously, hold value in cards. We think they are important. Well, Fran does too. So, dollar store cards are FROWNED upon. You do not buy those. Well, at least you don't give dollar store cards to Fran or her husband, Stan. (Not his real name either. I've just spent the last minute or so singing Stan & Fran....Fran & Stan to the tune of the Max & Ruby theme song so I just might call them Fran & Stan the next time I see them....though it will likely be under my breath.)
As I was saying, cards are important to Fran. They are special. She knows that a lovely card containing a heart-felt verse can convey how meaningful a person is in your life. That a funny card could give someone a much needed pick-me-up, that one of those birthday cards with the spoken messages could make someone laugh. You know, a Hallmark card or a Carlton card.
But, and here's the kicker.....
You DO NOT buy these cards.
No, you certainly don't. In fact, you don't buy cards at all. Purchasing cards is a colossal waste of money in Fran's eyes. After all, it just gets thrown out after it's read! So, when there's a special occasion in my bestie's life, whether it be her birthday or Christmas, she will get a phone call from her mother. Asking her to meet Fran at the card store.....
.....where Fran will hand her the card that she has picked out for her. My bestie will read it, thank her mom....and then hand it back and her mom will place it back on the shelf. Then they'll leave the store, not with any physical product, but with the picture and verse of that card at the forefront of their memories, and probably with that sense of closeness that comes from sharing feelings in an unspoken way....
....and with my bestie desperately trying not to roll her eyes.
But, truly, isn't that awesome? To have them both take time out of their busy days, the coordination of being able to be at the store at the same time, possibly having someone see this ritual, all that work adding up to a what, $8 savings? Honestly, the whole scenario tickles me to no end.
And, if the day were ever to come that
I got a phone call from Fran Chowder to meet her a card store, I'm pretty sure this'll be me....
....'coz, even though I'm a cardmaker, and even though I think a (handmade) card is one of the loveliest gifts you could receive (actually receive, I mean, not in a takesies-backsies type of way), there's no way I'm not going to participate in this ritual if given the chance.
And, I just might send her a card to thank her for her thoughtfulness. But I'd definitely break my no-buying-commercial-cards rule and get her one from the store. 'Coz, really, I'm a total s*&t like that.
