Stripes Or Dots! @ Little Red Wagon

 This week at

it's Imke's turn to choose the challenge and she's saying "Stripes or Dots!" which just means that she wants to see either or both on your project.

This is what I did....

As you can see, I have no shortage of dots on this card!  I've also managed some stripes on the paper pieced gift.  Digi is from The Cat's Pajamas.....and right now they have a 25% off sale until December 25th.

Oh, and one quick tip....I think I've mentioned this before but in case I haven't....when paper piecing something that's being held like this, don't even bother cutting around the hands.  Just print your image again and then paper piece the hands over the gift, it looks a lot more natural.  I'll crop the image to just the hands before I print to save ink and paper.  Just be sure to colour the hands before fussy cutting.  Much easier that way!

P.S.  I hope those of you who celebrate upcoming holidays are all ready for them.  I remember in past years I'd be scrambling like crazy right about now trying to get everything done before Christmas.  This year has been much better.  Not only am I working less hours, I told my clan that I would no longer be buying Christmas gifts and putting their names on them as From:, they had to buying their own gifts for giving.  I told my youngest (16 years old) that I would chip in on the money end for her, but that was it.  So, that meant less shopping as well as less wrapping, and being all ready (except for making some triple chocolate Nanaimo bars) by the 21st.  It's much better this way!!

Me On a Monday....Whaaaaaaat?

Yup, I've got an non-Little Red Wagon post!  Turns out I've managed to find a smidge more time this year 'round the holidays so I made something non-challenge related.  Okay, that's a bit misleading.  Usually, if I make something that isn't specifically for a Little Red Wagon challenge I'll hoard it to see if it can be used for an upcoming challenge, and therefore won't post it on my blog.  (I know I'm not the only one who does stuff like that.  (: )  But, I surprised myself and made something that actually impressed me.  And, I don't often impress myself.  Well, I sometimes do, but it's rarely for something one should be impressed about, it's more like about how much food I managed to eat at a buffet restaurant or what new interesting combination of curse words I put together in a situation that calls for swears.

Nope, I managed to impress myself with a crafty make.  And it's not a card.  Well, it is a card, but not just a card.  Anyhoo, I'll get on with the showing of it.  So, here is the outside.....

(Shout out to my daughter for helping out with the cinematography....wish I would have told her to record in landscape though....but to be honest, I figured she'd know more about what to do than I would!  (: )

Haha - bam!  It's a $20 bill in yo' face!  What's more is that I figured out the measurements all by myself because I wanted to use my Taylored Expressions lil bag die that I bought aaaggggeeees ago, and definitely have not been using much.  But the real impressive part (and why I'm showering myself with accolades) is that it all worked out on the first go and I didn't have to remeasure or redo or anything, and that, my friend, is nothing short of miraculous here at Huh. So This Is a Blog.  

Sentiment stamp is from The Cat's Pajamas.  Now, as some of you probably already know, The Cat's Pajamas have pivoted and are now strictly digi stamps (yay, digis!!) and cut files but I just gotta say, their clear stamps are top-notch.  Added a lil bit of colour and a little bit of Stickles, and this is all ready to go in my mailbox as a gift to out mail carrier.  Fun fact, I actually was a rural mail carrier back, almost 21 years ago now, and quit the job when my kids were born.  Our current mail carrier is the person I trained for the job, so she's been doing it for 21 years come January 1st!  So, she certainly deserves a little Christmas present.

Welp, that's all I got.  Feels kinda weird not to sign off with my usual, "check out what The Girlfriends have done".  But, hey, if you've haven't seen what they've done this week, do check them out.  They are all very talented, and definitely deserve some love.  (:

Do They Know It's Christmas? @ Little Red Wagon

 This week at

it's Kate's turn to chose the challenge and she's saying, "Do They Know It's Christmas?" which just means that she wants to see your Christmas/Winter Holiday  makes.  After all, it's only 12 days until Christmas!

This is what I did....

*gasp*  It's not a card. Nope, I made a mantle/shelf decoration!  This is a great way to use up some of those holiday paper scraps.  For each tree, all I did was die cut four triangles, fold them in half and then glue them together.  Then I just added a glitter foam die cut star, a computer generated sentiment and a Thickers ampersand, and it's all there was to it!

NBUS! @ Little Red Wagon

 This week at

it's Brenda's turn to choose the challenge and she's saying, "NBUS!", which reads (at least to me) as "New Bus"....but it's not actually a new bus that she wants to see on your projects...it's Never Before Used Stuff, which is a much broader challenge than having to use a new bus on your project.  [Just as well too, coz if there's a challenge about buses, I'm gonna make my card about pigs.  Don't see the connection between a bus and pigs?  Well, our up-the-road neighbour is a pig farmer, it's not a farrow to finish operation, it's a feeder/finisher farm.  That means they get in piglets at about 40 lbs., and grow them until they are market weight.  Now, these piglets aren't that big yet so guess what they use to deliver them?  Yup, a modified school bus.  There are regulations about how long a school bus can be in use for transferring student to school, for obvious safety reasons.  Usually, when a school bus.....let's say, ages out, of bussing students, it's still in good shape.  If it's lucky (or maybe unlucky depending on what kind of personality one wants to assign to a school bus) it will get modified to transport pigs.  I believe all the seats are removed (which does wreck the visual of all the pigs sitting in the seats while excitedly looking out the windows) and the driver's area is completely closed off, and I think that's the extent of the renovations.  From the outside, it still looks very much like a school bus.  So much so, that the first time I saw it docked at the barns, I was very much muttered, "What the actual f#$k?" when I drove by.  Anyhoo.....that's why if a challenge was ever about buses, I would totally make it about pigs....heck, I might even make it about pigs on a bus.  Only in my creation, they'd definitely be sitting on the seats, and some of them would definitely be wearing hats.  Coz, if you're on a field trip, you wanna be stylish.]

How's that for digression?  One of my more extensive ones, for sure.  No good segue from that.....NO WAIT, there is one!  *ahem*  Speaking of barns, here is my card.....

Ha!  Now, for my NBUS, this is the first time I've used this digi.  It's from Little Scraps of Heaven Designs.  It's also the first time I've used this Primacolur pencil combo for skin tones, which turned out to look lighter in the photos.  I usually colour people as caucasian, so this combo was new for me.  For the most part my Christmas cards are generally non-secular as I don't want assume the recipient's faith.  In this case, I made this specifically for my mil, and I, of course, know her beliefs.  And really, whether you believe in Christianity or not, this story is a part of Christmas celebrations.

On, and just to round out this....all over the place insomnia-induced rambling post....for the longest time, when looking at this digi, I was all like, "Why is Joseph wearing a Zorro mask?"  It wasn't until I got to colouring him that I realized it's his mustache.  D'oh!

Let It Snow! @ Little Red Wagon

 This week at

not only am I late posting, I'm also this week's host, and I'm saying, "Let It Snow!" which means I want to see those snowy creations.  Fitting, really, since we've had an unusual amount of snow this November (though it's raining today so it's almost all gone).

This is what I did....

As you can see, I've made my card all snow!  I added some pop dots in the middle of my scene panel, and glued down the sides, so it looks a little more snow hill-like.  Die is from Your Next Stamp, and the sentiment was computer-generated.

Not the easiest card to get a photo of.  I maybe should have went with a background that wasn't white.  Oh well....I'm gonna pretend the white background is just to add even more snow effect.  (:

Cut It Out! @ Little Red Wagon

This week at

it's Chrissy's turn to choose the challenge and she's saying, "Cut It Out!" which just means that she would like to see die cuts on your Christmas/winter project!

This is what I did.....

The be jolly die cut (cut from glitter fun foam) is from Stamplorations, as are the rectangle dies.  Now, I know, you're probably looking at the screen right now saying, "But, JanR, don't rectangles have 2 x 2 equal sides, not 4 equal sides?  Are you sure you didn't use a square die?"  Welp, let's just say this is a bit of a Frankenstein's Monster card.  I had originally intended to make this card rectangle shaped using the new yummy dies I just received from Stamplorations.  But then I found this PERFECT reindeer paper and HAD to use it...but there was only scraps of it left.  If you look closely at the right side of the card, you'll see that, not only did I not have enough paper for height, I also didn't have enough paper for width so I had to trim a different scrap and line it up with the first scrap, and then tape it onto a scrap piece of cardstock to have enough width.  Then, I had to cut that scrap into smaller pieces so I'd have two pieces to "stretch" it or else I would have ended up with a card that was....let me see here....just slightly taller than my middle finger in height.  [Someone stole my ruler so we're going with finger-length units of measure today.  Plus, I am LOVING thinking that at least some of you will be giving yourself (or my blog post) THE finger while you visually figure out how tall the card would be.]  Of course, if I had of known with all that finagling I'd end up with a card that was basically the same size as my stitched square dies, then I would have just went with those instead....though I do love the "wonky" stitches of this die.

I used die cuts for the reindeer too.  I got this package of Mama Elephant clear stamps and dies from Michaels at an insane discount....I believe it was $5 for the nine stamps with matching dies.  I KNOW!  Even though digis will always be #1 for me, I could not pass up that deal.  I'm pretty sure these are the only clear stamps with matching dies I own.....probably?  I know one should know what they have in their stash but hahahahahahahahahahahahaha.  I do have a good handle of what's in my crafty supplies but it's not like I've taken inventory.  I'm willing to bet this is the cutest set though.

No Patterned Paper! @ Little Red Wagon

  This week at

it's Imke's turn to choose the challenge and she's saying, "No Patterned Paper!", which is not how I say it.  I say it as "No PaTtErNeD PaPeR!?!?!?!?!?" followed by some epic wailing, because, if you know me at all, patterned paper is very prominent on most of my cards/projects.

Buuuuuuuut, it turns out that this was exactly the challenge I needed.  I needed to very quickly make two wedding cards.  And, having to eschew patterned paper means that I made this.....

.....and I quite like how it turned out.  I do think I should have made the sentiment panel smaller, but it's not hideously overlarge, so I'm calling it a win.  Sentiment was designed by yours truly.....who finally figured out that Canva would be an awesome tool for self-making sentiments and graphics for cards.

Side note, not always (coz, I'm old enough to remember not having a computer in the house), but probably for about 10-15 years or so, I kinda thought graphic design would be a career I would enjoy but I never pursued it.  One, (to simplify) the timing was always wrong, and two, I do believe there are a TON of graphic designers out there, meaning not a lot of job opportunities.  But, happily, with my one job, I have been given free rein to create graphics, posters, Facebook covers, etc. etc. etc. as part of my duties, so I do get to do some creative designing, which makes me happy.  Right now I'm doing a series of Facebook posts to get the word out about our 50/50 lottery to raise funds for a local hospital that consists mostly of funny animals and (imho, hilarious) puns, so that for sure makes me happy.  [Plus, there's a little petty part of me, the part that I don't talk about at parties (not that I actually go to any parties) that is just shy of gleeful, that once I showed my graphics to the team working on this fundraiser (which is a joint project for three hospitals), they immediately and (almost) unanimously decided to go with my graphics instead of the designs from another person, who is (probably close to) half my age, and has a background (and possibly a diploma) in graphic design.  Yes, that petty part is chuckling while doing a not-so-subtle "I win" dance.]

Let's Hear It For the Boy! @ Little Red Wagon

  This week at

it's Kate's turn to choose the challenge, and if you've been keeping an eye on her choices this year you'll know that her themes are all based on 80's music, and this challenge is no exception - it's "Let's Hear It For the Boy!" which just means that she would like to see cards for or about boys/men.  Oh, woah, woah woah!

This is what I did....

I absolutely adore this digi from Mo's Digital Pencil.  I think I've used it for at least one Christmas card every year since I bought it.  Really wish I was a better glitterer, so I could make the star sparkly but any time I've tried to make something that large sparkle, it's ended in disaster, so I just left the shining part to the imagination.

This boy so reminds me of my oldest....when he was this age he had blonde hair, though his was curly.  He was so sweet about Christmas....when he was about 2 years old, we were leaving my husband's parents' place on Christmas Eve, and when we walked outside he spotted a red flashing light on a communication tower off in the distance, and got very excited and said "Look, Mommy, Santa is coming soon!  I see Rudolph's nose!"  I thought that was adorable....and I didn't hesitate to use the fact that "Rudolph" (and Santa) were so close to get him to go to bed without any fuss.  (:

Unfortunately, I didn't include the artist's name with this digi, so I don't know who it's from.  I'm thinking it might be a colouring page which is why I didn't label it with the artist's name/shop??  Anyhoo, thought these happy cacti would make for a cute image for a thank you card.  Kept it very generic so it could be used for almost anything.

 This week at

it's my turn to choose the challenge and I'm saying, "Outside!" which just means that I want to see those projects with an outdoor scene, or things that can be found outside.  So think, flower gardens, insects, animals in their habitat, kids playing outdoor sports, etc. etc. etc.  Lots of possibilities!

This is what I did.....

Isn't this digi absolutely adorable?  It's by Sherry West Art.  I was actually thinking about making the star multicoloured rather than yellow....after all, I'm sure the Star Wars universe has stars that are different colours, but I I decided to stick with yellow.  Added some gold Stickles for extra sparkle too.

Flutterby! @ Little Red Wagon

 This week at

it's Chrissy's turn to choose the challenge and she's saying "Flutterby" which just means that she'd like to see a butterfly or butterflies on your project.

I tried to make a card with a butterfly as the star.....I really did.  But, as you know, butterflies (and moths) are evil creatures with razor sharp feet that have no regard for other beings in this world as evident when they fly directly into people's faces at inopportune moments causing said person to flail around and almost fall off a bike, or have to bail out of the batter's box during a ball game (where's it's lucky that the umpire is laughing too hard to kick said batter off the field for the barrage of swear words loosed from that player's tongue) or mildly injuring one's back from having to do Keanu Reeves in The Matrix-like moves to avoid being horribly disfigured when one is walking across a lawn during mid summer....so I just couldn't make a completely butterfly centric card work.

But, I did manage something with butterflies on it....

I used a digi from A Day for Daisies.  And while the butterflies are quite small, there's three of them, so I think I'm good.  I even added a touch of Stickles to them.....not so much because I think they deserve some glitter, more because then I can make sure they are glued to the page.  I think this sweet lil fairy is thanking me for that because I'm pretty sure that one butterfly IS EATING THROUGH HER DRESS!

Wreath! @ Little Red Wagon

 This week at

This is what I did.....

I went with this wreath from Pernilla Nilsson and made it into a Christmas wreath.  Not really sure if it's intended to be a Christmas wreath, but it did look very much like mistletoe to me.....so I went ahead and coloured it as if it were holly - ha!  I really wanted to go with very-solidly-Christmasy patterned paper but I didn't seem to have any that worked.  I've got, like, over 30 pads of holiday/winter paper pads, you'd think I could have found something.  Still, the paper did come from one of those pads, so technically, it is holiday paper, even if it's not very Christmasy.

Girls Just Wanna Have Fun! @ Little Red Wagon

  This week at

it's Kate's turn to choose the challenge and, as you might remember, she's taking us on a journey through the 80s, using inspiration from that decade to set themes.  This week it's "Girls Just Wanna Have Fun!" which means she wants to see those feminine projects.  *she just wanna, she just wanna...*

This is what I did....

I'm not overly pleased with the colours I used for this.  My printer was being a poopoohead and printed the image (from Tiddly Inks) with some reddish coloured lines that were most visible in the hair, so I then decided to colour the hair an auburn colour.  I felt that limited my choices for Wryn's outfit which is why I ended up doing blue and green....with a splash of pink.  Not thrilled with how I did my sentiment really either.  Oh well, sometimes it is what it is.

Okay, so I did a thing.  Because once this idea jumped into my head it wouldn't stop insisting I do it.  And, it was so darn persistent.  I tried to reason with it....I told it that there'd probably be a lot of people that wouldn't even get it.  Idea didn't care.  I told it that it was probably not as funny as it thought it was.  Idea still didn't care.  I told it that I would probably never be able to use the card to give to someone.  Idea gestured to all the different spots in my craft corner where there are scads of cards just sitting collecting dust.  I had to admit, that was a pretty good point.  

So, this is what I did......

So, yeah.  And, just so you're aware, this is where the inspiration came from, not the actual actual song....

Coz, really, why not?  (:  (Edited to add:  Just to note.....apparently the first chorus is "things are gonna get easier" while the second chorus is "things are gonna be easier".  Kinda wishing I went with the get instead.....)

Use a Digi! @ Little Red Wagon

  This week at

it's my turn to choose the challenge and I'm saying, "Use a Digi!".  As you know, I'm a (mostly) digital stamp user, so this is an easy one for me.  (:

This is what I did.....

I used a digi from Graciellie Designs.  My sentiment is computer generated in Word and printed directly on the card front.  Problem was.....I forgot to make my margins bigger than the actual card width to trick my printer into printing closer to the edge.  But, I thiiiiiiink I successfully covered that up with those two gems??  If I didn't, just lie and say I totally did, 'kay?  (:

Washi Any Way You Can @ Little Red Wagon

  This week at

it's Chrissy's turn to choose the challenge and she's saying, "Washi Any Way You Can", which just means that she would like to see you use washi tape on your project.

This is what I did....

Look, it's another digi from Mo's Digital Pencil!  I love this whimsical Christmas tree.  And, in case it's not obvious, those stripes of trees behind it are all washi tape.  Now, this is dollar store washi tape that's a couple of years old so I had to make sure to secure it on the black side of the panel it's on or else it wouldn't be sticking.  That's okay, the challenge doesn't say the tape has to be sticky.  (:

All About Chocolate! @ Little Red Wagon

  This week at

it's Imke's turn to choose the challenge and she's saying, "All About Chocolate!" which means she wants to celebrate one of my favourite words, all.  Afterall, (see what I did there), the word all is the root of lots of different fantastic words like, tall, (a word that could describe all my babies & sub-babies) ball (which I'm hoping to play next year after a two years of pandemic cancelled seasons),  fall (the season, not the action, which we're all about to slide into here in the northern hemisphere), whatchamacallit (it's way more fun that saying, "that thing") and so many more....

Hahahahahahaha.  Of course, I'm being ridiculous.  My favourite word in this week's theme is definitely chocolate.  Anything from Lindt to Mint Smoothies from Rhéo Thompson (if you don't know Rhéo Thompson chocolate, you definitely should....even though it's just a candy store/factory located in Stratford, Ontario) to cheap $2.00 solid Easter bunnies.  I love 'em all.

But, did I use actual chocolates on my make this week?  Uh uh.  Can't trust myself around paper chocolates....good chance I'd try to eat them.  I went with the colour of chocolate instead....

But I made sure to make it sweet too.  (:  Digi is from Mo's Digital Pencil.
