Merry Christmas @ Little Red Wagon

Merry Christmas, everyone! I hope you're having a wonderful day, and I'm also hoping I have hydro by now. (I'm typing this up Christmas Eve morning.) As my local readers know, an ice storm swept though Ontario on the weekend and caused some havoc. We have been without power since Sunday at noon, there are lines down up the road from us. Thank goodness we have a generator, or I'd be one b*tchy blogger by now! It runs most everything, can't do laundry or run the dishwasher and it doesn't get the microwave up to full power, and boy oh boy is it cold in the mornings in our bedrooms (15ºC - we shut the generator off at night) but it could be so much worse so I ain't gonna complain. (Update:  We got our power back yesterday at suppertime.  Never would have dreamed if would be back on so fast considering the damage.  Big thanks goes to the hydro crew that was down from Barrie who fixed up our line!!!!)

Okay, so onto LRW business. With this being Christmas Day and all, Rosanne wants to see anything Christmas. Eeeeeeeasy! Right now, all I have left of Christmas crafting is one card, finishing up a banner and then adding some sentiments to the insides of completed cards so I'm fairing better than the last few years when I was still making Christmas cards on Boxing Day. I thought I'd show a few of the things I made for Christmas.

Die, Brad, Die

No, I'm not talking about Brad Pitt, or Brad Paisley. And, I'm even not talking about that jerk Brad that I dated briefly in high school. No, I'm talking about that not-used-much-anymore crafty item - brads. (I should have put "Die, Brads, Die" for my title but I didn't want you to think I dated two jerky Brads in high school.)

I have brads, as I'm sure we all do, but I don't like 'em. In fact, I really quite hate them. Okay, that's not quite true. I only hate the back part of the brads. You know, that sharp prongy part that I always manage to jam under my fingernails. The part that makes a brad, a brad. I find I never get the hole punched through in the right place, I get prongs that want to stick out of the side of the card etc. etc. etc.

Thing is though, there are some pretty brads out there (There's some pretty Brads out there too, I mean really, I'm sure we've all seen a pic of Bradley Cooper.) but I tend not to use then for all the reasons above.

But then I discovered something that's so super easy. I found out that if you wiggle those dagger-sharp pointy prongs back and forth a few times they will break right off. Once you do that you have a decorative button or a metal embellishment, or simply half a brad.

And then it all works out just fine.

Well, unless you actually have a Brad. I don't recommend trying to make them into half a Brad. Except if it's that jerky Brad from my teenage years. If you want to make him half a Brad, I won't stop you.

Non-Traditional Christmas Colours @ Little Red Wagon

Regan wants to see non-traditional Christmas colours. So, no red & green. This was no sweat for me. I find I actually struggle with making Christmas cards with traditional colours. (And really, how many paper pads out there are all just plain old red and green anyways?)

This is what I did.....

Had to do a nighttime pic again. The bow's shadow from my overhead kitchen lights makes it looks like she's got a dirty hat, poor thing. Digi is from Dilly Beans.

Halfway Inspiration @ UnstampaBelles

Well, December is about half over now - yikes! Time for some inspiration from your truly for our Christmas challenge at UnstampaBelles. Just remember - no stamps!

I know some of you out there are probably thinking, "No stamps?!?! Then no card/project!" But, let me tell ya, it's super easy to create something without using stamps. So easy, in fact, that I do it all the time. (And believe me, if I can do it, you can do it too.) So, I thought I'd show you how all the time I do it. Strap in, fair readers, as this is going to be a pic heavy post.

First up....my "official" halfway inspiration project.

Patterned paper, glitter paper, trim, bling & Thickers but no stamps.

And, you can go masculine with no stamps......

No patterned paper here. But help from my Silhouette, an embossing folder, a strip of washi tape and alpha stickers - but no stamps.

And, you go back to feminine....

Again no patterned paper and help from my Silhouette and alpha stickers but no stamps.

Or, you can make patterned paper do most of the work for you.

Who says it has to be cards though? You can make altered projects too.

Christmas Songs Blog Hop

Welcome to the Songs of Christmas Blog Hop with Two Scrapbook Friends! You should have arrived here from Audrey's blog. Wasn't her project wonderful?

Our Blog Hop is all about the Songs of Christmas.

Okay so, because I'm me, I couldn't just chose a normal Christmas song or carol. I just had to go with something a little more non-traditional. The song I picked is "I Won't Be Home For Christmas" by Blink-182. I don't know if you're familiar with the song (And if you aren't and would like to be, please listen to the song rather than just reading the lyrics. You really don't get the whole effect if you just read the lyrics and I end up looking slightly deranged. Laureen & Sharlene, you guys can go ahead and just think of me as slightly deranged.) but the gist of it is that a guy gets fed up with Christmas and goes a bit whackadoodle.

(As a side note: The single charted at number one in Canada but it did not chart anywhere else. It is the only Blink-182 single to ever be number one in Canada. "I Won't Be Home for Christmas" was also the longest running number one single in Canada for 2001. It was number one for five weeks in 2001 and for one week in 2002. - Thank you Wikipedia.)

Now, there's a couple of reasons why I chose this song. First, it cracks me up. Secondly, I have to admit, I can relate to this song, just a little bit. Don't get me wrong, there's lots I love about Christmas. I love Christmas crafting; I love shopping for that perfect present for my family and friends; I love the food (Omg, do I love the food. Those tiny amazing appetizers and the tiny delectable desserts that you can pile on your tiny little plate and return to the table multiple times and because all the food is just teeny-tiny yumminess you can trick your subconscious into thinking that you're just lightly snacking instead of it knowing you've consumed the equivalent of a large meatlovers pizza with extra cheese in the span of 13 minutes.); I love the lights and decorations; I love my kids' palpable excitement etc. etc. etc.

But there are some things I don't love about Christmas. And, I'm betting other people can relate to that too. I don't love standing in line forever at a store (my ticked off body language and repeated sighs are a dead giveaway); I don't love that panic I start to feel when I realize I've got so much to do and very little time to do it in; I find my husband's very large, very, very loud family crammed into his parents' not very large house kinda trying and I really, really don't love listening to Alvin & The Chipmunks sing "Christmas Don't Be Late", and....well, you get the idea.

So, I decided I wanted to celebrate that facet of the Christmas. 'Cause it is very much a part of the holidays. That frazzled, somebody-pour-me-an-eggnog-spiked-with-rum, holy-smokes-I-just-need-a-minute-to-catch-my-breath element.

And I made a fitting card.....

I used the new Countdown to Christmas paper from Bazzill. Isn't it wonderful that black is the new....well, black for Christmas? I just love it. Digi is from Tiddly Inks. It's hard to tell from the pic but I added Glossy Accents to her glasses and the bulbs. And I added some polka dots to her dress with a white gel pen.  The sentiment is just computer-generated from Word.  A bit of twine and a few buttons, and there you have it.

Santa @ Little Red Wagon

Yeppers, it's December. Are you feeling it yet? You know what I mean that panic that starts to set in when you realize that Christmas is 3 weeks away and you've got lots to do and little time left to do it? You know what I mean, that Christmas spirit! And, what lovable character is the embodiment of Christmas spirit? Why, Santa, of course! So, that what I picked for the challenge this week - anything with Santa.

And this is what I did......

Love this digi from TheOctopodeFactory. I went cas with this one.  That is just one sheet of patterned paper, pulled off the pad as is and trimmed to size.  Kinda feels like I cheated.  I might have made up for that a bit by the amount of times I peeled off the alpha stickers and moved them half a millimetre to get them in just the right spot.

Hey, Prismacolor Pencils, #s 941, 947 & 948.....

....I've got a bone to pick with you.  Ya you, Light Umber, Dark Brown & Sepia.  Why is it that when I colour with you you're a really deep, dark brown that's really awesome but when I go at you with oms, you completely change your hue and lighten right up?  I'd prefer you didn't do that.  So stop it.

I kinda case'd myself here.  I did a similar card last Christmas.  Originally I was going to even do the same colours and papers, but then I decided that would be boring.  My next plan was to do pink, light blue and limey green but when I saw this paper pad in the pile I thought I'd give it a go instead.

Christmas @ UnstampaBelles

OMG, it's December now, time for me to start panicking. Am I even close to being ready? Nope, not at all! I've got tons of Christmas crafting to do, much less decorating, baking, shopping, wrapping etc. But, one thing I did get done was a kinda pre-New Year's resolution of pulling stuff out of my aptly-named Altered Projects Graveyard (where all the altered projects I buy go to die as I have the best of intentions then never use them) and finally make something with them. And those types of projects are perfect for challenges like UnstampaBelles Christmas challenge because, really, how often do you use stamps on altered projects?

So, this is what I made.....

I've had those mdf letters for, I don't know how long but definitely years.  Mod podged on some patterned paper, added a few embellies, and there you have it - one resurrected altered project.  (It's a Christmas miracle!)

Tying Ribbon

I'm picky. Yep, I am. And, I'm not even going to apologize for it. As the saying goes, "anything worth doing is worth doing right" and all that.

So, when I'm tying ribbon, I want it to look really, really good. I'd like it to look perfect, if possible, which really isn't. In order for the bow to look as good as I can make it, I have to work really, really hard at tying it. 'Cause I'm really not that good at tying bows.

And apparently, my bow making ability is tied (ha ha - tied) directly into my genioglossus muscle. 'Cause it's impossible for me to tie a proper bow without engaging that particular muscle.

Yep, long story short, that paragraph above is just my fancy way of saying that I can't tie a bow without sticking my tongue out.

(It's kinda also my way of saying that I really didn't have anything to say about anything interesting.)

Aren't they though? They're easy enough to make (I mean really, if I can do it, anyone can do it) and they are meant to impress.

I coloured on textured cardstock again.  'Cause that's awesome too.  Not giving-a-shaker-card-to-someone-who-doesn't-craft-so-they-don't-know-that-they're-not-that-hard-to-make-so-they're-touched-that-you-went-through-all-that-effort-just-for-them awesome, much more of a hey-I'm-really-enjoying-doing-this-technique-'cause-I-get-to-be-lazier-'cause-I-don't-have-to-use-oms awesome.

The Card That Didn't Want To Get Made

Ever have one of those? Well, this birthday card I made sure was one. I originally was going to go with a digi from Mo's Digital Pencil. I coloured it up twice, once on white paper and once on kraft, and blah. (That's my colouring job, not the stamp.) So, I tried a different digi, this one an older one from Tiddly Inks. Coloured it up twice too. And yeck, not good. (Again, not the digi's fault.)

But then I got lucky because there was a new release from Tiddly Inks, which was in the same theme as the other to stamps I tried to work with (girl/woman with cake/cupcake). And, I was able to make it happen.

You know what? This even worked out better than what I was going to originally do anyways.

Sentiment stamp was a freebie from Create With Tlc.

I don't know why I always seem to have to stick a button on cards that are going in the mail.  It's not like I want to have to put two regular stamps on and then an extra 7¢ stamp.  But, the bow just looked so indecently naked without it that I just couldn't let it go that way.

Accordion Fold @ Little Red Wagon

Joanne wants to see an accordion fold. Well technically not Joanne. This was a leftover from Carolyn. I think she laughed maniacally when she decided on this challenge. Personally, I think all us Girlfriends should tie her to a chair and make her come up with a project for this challenge. And we'll put her scoring board on the table juuuuuuuust out of reach.

Though really, I honestly shouldn't be complaining. This challenge forced inspired me to come up with something I would probably never would have done otherwise. And I was actually pleased with how it turned out.

And here it is.......

Now, you're probably all like....."Ummmmmmm, hello? Where's the accordion fold? Poor dear, she must not know what an accordion fold is."

But, look, I do so.

Ta da! And, for the record, I'd just like to say that my thumb is in no way hiding the fact that I had originally put the velcro in a different spot but had to change it because the star wouldn't stay closed properly and a bit of the paper came off when I moved it, nope in no way at all.

Ha ha, take that Carolyn.

I Tried Something New

(Looking for my Little Red Wagon post? Ha, I hid it! [insert evil laughter] And if my super-secret plan to pour glue in your mouse scrolly wheel has worked, you'll never find it. [insert more evil laughter])

So, as the title says, I tried something new. Well, not new new. It's not like I'm the first person to ever do it or anything. In fact this blogger here does it, quite beautifully and much lovelier than I.  (Be sure to stay a bit and check out her other cards.  They are amazing!)  But, it was new to me. And, I quite liked the effect, and the process.

And here it is......

See, I coloured on textured cardstock. 'Cause sometimes it wants to feel pretty too.

Actually, the entire card is a bit on the "different" side. A not-really-a-Christmas-image digi from Tiddly Inks, texture paste, a whole lotta black for a holiday card, and different for me, not many layers, no patterned paper and ink stamped holly.

And, one more difference, I actually really like it - yay!

And as you can see I used some burlap.....which I have to admit, I'm now wondering if burlap is actually considered trim. I dunno....I guess I'll leave it up to Jayne to decide. She's a stickler, that Jayne, she might tell me I whip up a new project, something a little more fitting. So, watch this space! ;-)

What's Schnew??

Had a chance to do some crafting today - yay! Might have a chance to do a bit more crafting too - yay! This is what I made so far......

I wasn't happy with the fact that I managed to get some schnew on the corner of the sentiment. I hate it when schnew shows up on my projects.

Anyone else not happy with Blogger's picture sizes? X-large is gigantic and large is too small.  I downsize my photos for uploading so I just go with Original Size, which works, but I still like to complain anyways.

Rosanne wants to see (insert whiny voice) Christmas tags. I've said it in the past....tags are not my fave thing to make. For some reason, I just can't do 'em. So, off to Pinterest I went for some inspiration. I found this link, and I made......

....this.

Meh. I love the idea, but I don't think I nailed it. Plus, I was being a stash conscious crafter and I was using up a scrap of ribbon when I should have just hacked into a long piece of much wider more scarf-like full piece of ribbon instead.

(Pssst. Don't tell Rosanne, but stuck my tag on a card just after I snapped this pic. :-) )

Halloween @ Little Red Wagon

we're celebrating Halloween! So, let's see those Halloween cards or other projects.

I've already posted my share of Halloween cards so I thought I'd just show the rest of 'em in one post. And here they are.....

Digi is from Birdie Brown. Went a little crazy with the black Stickles, I'm thinkin'.

Digi is from Tiddly Inks. Sentiment is from Create With Tlc, and after all was said and done I really wish I'd printed it off a bit smaller.

Digi is from Just Inklined. Did something a little different from my normal cover-all-the-cardstock-with-pp-and-tons-of-layers. I also did some actual stamping and heat embossing - whaaaaaat? When I saw this digi I thought it was perfect, didn't see a lot of ghosties out there and these were just the right amount of scary/funny. Then after I finished the card and got looking at the ghost on the left......anyways, I really probably shouldn't go there so I'm shutting up.

I Don't Like Halloween....

....but I sure like making Halloween cards. I usually make more than I need to, and this year I was kinda whining to myself as I had more Halloween digis I wanted to buy than cards I needed to make.

I'm glad this one made the cut though. It's just perfect.

Yes, Halloween has actually made me do some crafty things I using hate doing, like actual stamping.  That's right, I don't like stamping.  I know you're all probably saying, "Whaaaaat?" and you're all going to have a meeting to vote me out of the crafting community but I won the immunity totem or whatever it's called (not a reality tv fan) long ago so you're outta luck.

Yes, I stamped on the card.  That's little spider is stamped.  So is the sentiment.  And not only is it stamped, it's also embossed!  And I don't like embossing either.  I hate it when the paper gets the slightest bit warped.  But I'm glad Halloween made me do it, 'cause it all worked out just fine.
