Shaker Card
Sub-Titled: Whose Bright Idea Was It To Make A Shaker Card Anyway?
Hmmmm....I guess that would be me. So the story.....(at this point feel free to either get comfortable while I expound or skip the blather and scroll down to the card).
For awhile now I'd been thinking about giving a shaker card a try. Then I saw this card and I practically started salivating. I wanted to make a card exactly like it. Problem was I had no pumpkin nesties, no acetate and no foam tape so really, no means to make a shaker card.
The next couple times I was out shopping I bought some acetate and some foam tape. So, I had the basics. Yesterday I had some free time (Well, not really "free" time, more like time I didn't want to spend doing something "productive.") so I decided to get started.
But still no pumpkin nesties. Now, I didn't really want to make a shaker card with a digi on the inside, kinda like a snowglobe idea, I wanted to make a card almost exactly like the one I'd been inspired by. Lacking any sort of nesties that would work meant I had to turn on THE CRICUT. (dun, dun, dunnnn)
I have alove/hate relationship with my THE CRICUT. (dun, dun, dunnnn) I don't know about your Cricut but mine is slightly evil (as I quickly glance to my right to make sure it's not watching me type this). Scanning my meager selection of cartridges I noticed that the Plantin cartridge had an apple. Great, that'll do.
I turned on THE CRICUT. (dun, dun, dunnnn) As usual, it growled it's menacing growl at me for interrupting its slumber. Now, to make a shaker card, you need a frame. So, I set about making an apple frame. Aye-yie-yie, total failure. I figured that if you cut an apple at 5" then cut an apple from the same spot at 4.25" you'd have an apple inside an apple. Nope, not even close. THE CRICUT (dun, dun, dunnnn) gobbled up two pieces of cardstock with relish (and I mean with gusto not the condiment) while I tried in vain to make an apple frame.
Determined not to be beaten so early in the game, I took one of the intact 5" apples and one of the intact 4.25" apples, taped them together, and on my second try, managed to painstakingly cut around the smaller apple with a craft knife to make an apple frame. Ta-da! I turned and chortled at THE CRICUT (dun, dun, dunnnn) and then quickly hit the power button before it could retaliate.
But, as you know dear reader, that was a mistake. I still needed the beast. When I powered it back up I swear its growl was a little more menacing than usual. I fed it the patterned paper. It actually went off without a hitch. Then came the acetate. THE CRICUT (dun, dun, dunnnn) balked. Even with the blade on 6 and the pressure on Max all I got was an apple shape outline carved into the acetate. Fine, I could deal with that. Out came the scissors and I trimmed it out.
Next I glued the now very fingerprinty piece of acetate to the apple frame. A bit of glue squished out of the frame onto the acetate but by this time I wasn't going to sweat it though normally I'd be peeved. Grab the foam tape......and discover that the tape is too wide for the frame. Grrrrr. Yes, at this point I realized that I should most definitely have made the frame wider. Well, there was no way I was going through all that again so that meant cutting the foam tape in half. What fun that was.
Okay, foam tape on, microbeads poured onto acetate and ready to put the patterned paper on the back. I touched the patterned paper to the tape, decided to adjust it a bit and pulled it off, which caused 47 microbeads to bounce up off the acetate and onto the foam tape. I uttered aloud, "You've got to be kidding me."
After a lot of muttering, more than one swear word and a sore back from hunching, I managed to carefully scrape all the microbeads off the tape. I slammed (well, not literally, but metaphorically, fer sure) the patterned paper on the back. And there I had it, one apple shaker.
Now, I could go on about this card to talk about how I discovered that the apple had a leak and was losing microbeads (which I plugged with some more foam tape) or how I decided that the apple should really have been rounder and smaller and how I actually considered making another one or how I had planned on it to be a very fun looking card but it ended up going through a whole bunches of makeovers (about 5 I'm thinking) but at this point even I'm getting bored with this post so I can only image how many times you've thought, "For the love of Mrs. Marshall's tarts [yeah, I know you don't know who that is but I just had one (okay, two) of her tarts about an hour ago and they are thee best tarts in the universe and I love them so much that I would marry them if I could, seriously) would you show the gosh-darn (feel free to insert the expletive of your choice of gosh-darn just doesn't do it for you) card already!"
Wow, that last paragraph was pretty wacky, even for me. It's possible I'm a bit tart-drunk. I am a bit of a light-weight.
So, finally here is the card.
Just so you know, it looks a lot cooler in real life. Plus, you get that added sensory bonus of the whole shaking part as well.
So now I can cross "shaker card" off my bucket list. Not that I have a bucket list. And if I did, yeah like I'd put something something like "make shaker card" on it. Okay, yes, I probably would. But it would definitely be below "eat more of Mrs. Marshall's tarts."

Get Your Sketch On @ Squigglefly
This week at Squigglefly the challenge is to use the sketch you'll find there. Now remember, the sketch is to serve as inspiration, you don't have to follow it completely exactly. (At least not this week when it's The Marvels' turn. Our boss Marlene is pretty easy-going and cool. Now if this was The Headliners' week, it might be a different story. I heard that Heather is a real whip-cracker so, when she does a sketch, you might not want to take the same liberties.)
And, what liberties am I speaking of? Why these right here.....
See, I went with circles rather than ovals. And that was totally because of my rebellious nature, not at all due to the fact that I have no oval nesties or the like.
"A Thanksgiving card?" you might be saying. Remember us Canucks celebrate Thanksgiving on the 2nd Monday in October, so really, not so early.
I coloured up a Shy Bear. (Well, not technically. I like to leave my Shy Bear al fresco. I did colour his props though.) I love Shy Bears. There's a whole bunch of them for all different occasions ranging from Christmas to Valentine's Day to birthday to "just because". I used Shy Bear: Pilgrim Bear. What was I thinking?
So I saw this card and I totally went "oooooooh, that would be perfect for a friend of mine." I rushed over to Kenny K Downloads to buy the digi (I know, me buy a digi) so I could make a similar card.
Once I got the digi printed out and as it stared up at me I said to myself, "Omg, you totally bit off more than you could ever possibly chew." Also, check out the dt samples at Kenny K's Girlz. Yeah, I knew I wouldn't even come close to those.
But, I did stick with it. The card totally took me for-ev-er to complete.
But I have to admit that I do like how it turned out.
Edited to add: Darn it! There so should be a comma between those first two words, right? (Yep me, the comma Queen, forgot a dang comma.)

School is really, really great!
At least according to this card it is.
Sure is pink, isn't it? It's for my daughter (who loves all things pink and glittery) for her first day of grade 1 tomorrow. Digi is from Bugaboo Stamps.
Also made one for one of my sons but it's waaaaaay too dark to take a pic right now. Might add it to this post tomorrow. (Already had made this one for ds # 1 in case you're thinking I was just going to leave him out.)

Blue/Green @ Squigglefly
Happy Labour Day to all those who get today as a holiday. This week at Squigglefly the challenge is to use the colours blue and/or green on your card. Whatever shade or hue of those colours you wanna do, is great. And remember, your whole card doesn't have to be blue and/or green (though that would be a neat way to challenge yourself) just as long is they're your main colours.

Shopping vs. Actually Crafting
Honestly, sometimes I wonder if I like shopping for crafting supplies more than crafting. I'll often see something I really, really like or like some and it's a really, really good price or it's really, really cheap and I figure that I just might use it so I'd better buy it (yep, the dollar stamp bin at Michaels used to really suck me in) or I'll see something that's a really good package deal and I can't resist snatching it up. Problem is, I generally stick with the same old same old and I've got lots of stuff that hasn't been or has been barely used. (Case in point: My fav scrapbooking store had a pre-order deal on Thickers where you could purchase a bundle of 10 packs for only $2.50 a pack! But there were 3 different bundles. And I couldn't decide. They haven't even come in yet and I'm already wondering what the heck I'm going to do with 30 packages of Thickers. What's worse, what am I going to do when I have 30 packages of "q"s and "z"s?)
Needless to say, I feel I have a lot of crafting supplies and I should use some of them up before I go shopping again. But, who's kidding who, that ain't gonna happen. I'm already chomping at the bit to go to the aforementioned store (which is Two Scrapbook Friends in case you're wondering) and have a trip planned for Thursday since my kids will be back in school and I won't have to hear "noooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo" when I say I'm going to a "craft store."
Ah yes, dear reader, you're probably wondering if there's a point to all this. (Would love to just say "nope" and hit publish post. That would totally amuse me.) I do have a card to show. And, on that card is are some embellishments that fell into the first category I described at the beginning of this post (that was ages ago now, eh?). I bought those canvas banners some time ago and they sat in a drawer completely unloved. I actually picked them up a time or two and said to myself, "What was I thinking?"
Hmmmmm.....turns out, for once, I actually knew what I was doing.
And finally, (that is if you are still with me here but hey, it's been two weeks since my last post so I feel some blabbling is warranted) this card was made at the request of my mother, who said, and I quote, "Could you make me a card exactly like this one only for a man, so use man colours and a different image and put 'Happy Birthday' on it somewhere and when you do the verse make sure it says, 'from the both of us'? But otherwise, just like it."
And no, the woman wasn't joking.
